This sparepart is called "damper". It is for use in Roland large format inkjet printers. This part is built in front of the printhead and it is part of the ink assembly unit. The function is to be a filter for particles inside the ink to protect the printhead. Further by moving the printhead during the print process different status of pressure inside the inksystem would disturb the printquality. The damper compensates this effect. A small reservoir for ink inside the damper ensures continous inkflow to the printhead. Normally the damper is filled half to three-quarters with ink. If that is not the case something is wrong with the ink assembly unit. Damper have to be exchanged regular. Roland suggests to change damper within 6 months.
